Job Summary

This Athletic Trainor position provides patient care with physician oversight in both clinical and operating room settings. This position requires the incumbent to possess the clinical evaluation and educational skills expected of an athletic trainer in addition to skills to assist the surgeon in the operating room to improve efficiency. The Athletic Trainer has responsibility for the evaluation and treatment of medical and musculoskeletal pathology consistent with the scope and practice of athletic training clinical competencies as defined by the NATABOC and the State of Indiana Athletic Training Licensing Board.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeon with patient positioning, preparation and draping. Maintains sterile operating field, cut sutures, assist MD with tissue retraction, exposure of the operative area, suctioning, sizing and preparation of previously harvested graft-tissue, position of arthroscopic camera, and suturing skin and wound closure under supervision of the physician.
  • Perform thorough medical history on each patient, including history of the injury or condition, primary complaint, pain level assessment, past medical history, review of medications and allergies, and how quality of life is affected.
  • Perform an appropriate physical examination on each patient seen, including; range of motion testing, strength testing, sensation testing, palpation, functional testing, ligamentous testing, and special tests as needed.
  • Order diagnostic studies under the direction of a physician, including; radiographs, MRIs, EMG studies, CT scans, diagnostic ultrasounds, rehabilitation referrals, and physician referrals.
  • Prepare and assist the physician with injection procedures done in the office.
  • Provide proper post-operative wound care and education, removal of sutures and dressing changes to post-surgical patients as directed by the attending physician.
  • Develop and implement patient management plans, assist in provision of continuity of care from office visits through surgery if necessary as well as therapy needs.
  • Perform cast and/or durable medical equipment (DME) application and removal.
  • Serve as a link between patient and physician during patient care. Deliver education specific to the needs of each individual patient, including exercise instruction and demonstration and answering patient questions about the treatment plan, surgery, rehabilitation and future care.
  • Document patient visits accurately, following all outlined guidelines in the electronic databases to include history, physical exam, diagnostic test results, impression, plan, and patient learning.
  • Complete administrative/clerical responsibilities necessary for effective and efficient clinic flow, including the completion of FML or short-term disability paperwork specific to surgery. Ensure chart availability/preparedness for surgery and clinic follow-up. Provide a timely response to patient phone calls. Handles general office duties and any other tasks assigned by the physicians or clinic manager.

Education Requirements

  • Minimum: Bachelor of Athletic Training
  • Preferred: Master of Athletic Training


Experience Requirements

  • Minimum: One (1) year of experience working in an Orthopedic Physician practice setting


License / Certification Requirements

  • Board of Certification (BOC), Inc. Athletic Trainer Certification
  • Athletic Trainer License valid to practice in the state of Indiana
  • BLS (American Heart Association)


Qualifications

Education

Bachelors or better in Athletic Training or related field.
