Job Summary

The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant provides care under the supervision of an occupational therapist, to help patients restore function and regain the ability to perform everyday tasks like dressing, grooming, and eating. The Occupational Therapist Assistant may modify an intervention only in accordance with changes in patient status and within the scope of the plan of care that has been established by the occupational therapist.

Job Responsibilities

  • Administer occupational therapy treatments to patients, under the direction of and as an assistant to an occupational therapist.
  • Implement evidence-based treatment protocols, as directed by an occupational therapist, including use of manual exercises and treatment equipment, application of physical agents, and patient assistance to perform various physical activities, including functional activities, daily living activities, and the use of assistive and supportive devices, and record daily treatments.
  • Observe patients during treatments, compile data on patients' responses to treatments and progress, and report verbally and in writing to the occupational therapist.
  • Evaluate the learning needs and capabilities of patients and family members, and initiate patient and family education in a timely manner relative to age, length of stay, readiness to learn, and emotional status.
  • Confer with members of occupational therapy staff and other health team members, individually and in conference, to exchange, discuss, and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment programs.
  • Consistently meet patient care productivity standard as established by department. Complete all documentation including patient billing in a timely manner.
  • Orient, instruct, direct, and supervise work activities of support personnel, including rehab aides, occupational therapy assistant students, and volunteers as appropriate and available.
  • Participate in referral development, marketing, policy and procedure development, and performance improvement initiatives related to occupational therapy.
  • Comply with all applicable policies and procedures, including, but not limited to all departmental and functional policies and procedures, maintain acceptable attendance records, arrive for duty punctually, comply with HIPAA and follow dress code.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education Requirements

  • Minimum: Associate Degree in Occupational Therapist Assistant


Experience Requirements

  • Minimum: None
  • Preferred: Two (2) Years Experience as a COTA


License/Certification Requirements

Minimum:

  • Licensed by the state of Indiana as an Occupational Therapist Assistant
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Association)


Qualifications

Education

Associates or better in Occupational Therapy Assisting or related field.
